DIY Fall Flower Facial Steam

DIY Fall Facial Flower steam

Autumn is here and the leaves are softly giving up their summer colors in exchange for the rich reds, browns, yellows and oranges of fall. It is a lovely reminder to shed off some of the old patterns and habits that are no longer serving our highest good. I can think of no better way to celebrate this transition than with a send off from the summer’s wildflowers and a warm steam.

Welcoming in the cooler weather with a wildflower and crystal facial steam just gets me giddy. The combination of colors, smells and good energy that this ritual offers is sure to open up not only your pores, but your heart as well. If you’re anything like me, then this is just what you need!

So what do you need for this heavenly escape? Luckily, this isn’t too labor intensive. All you need is a large bowl (for steaming), a large spoon, a kettle for boiling water, a towel and the flowers and crystals that will romance you into relaxation.

You can try many different combinations of flowers and crystals, but I always defer to intuition and what’s in the pantry closet already. This week I chose lavender buds, calendula petals, chamomile flowers, jasmine, cornflower, hibiscus and rose buds. I wanted to really get a variety of sweet energies, but as I just mentioned, I am a firm believer in doing what you feel called to in the moment—I know this may sound a little foreign, but the more you cultivate a listening ear to your inner desire, the stronger you will resonate with your internal wisdom and intuition. There is a learning curve. Be patient and kind to yourself.

Oh and how much? Yet again, I would say find what feels right for you, but if you’re someone who needs a little extra guidance I would mix evenly until you have about 1 cup of flowers for 4 cups of water per steam. It is great to make extra in one batch and gift to friends and family who will enjoy as well!

After you have all your flowers mixed in the bowl it is time to add your favorite crystals. I chose clear quartz, which enhances the flower energies as well as is a “heal all” for many conditions, and rose quartz, which is great for increasing love and opening your heart chakra. I like to say a little intention or prayer at this point to prepare myself for a luxurious escape.

All that’s left if the water and the magic will start to flow. Heat up your kettle until your water is just under a boil. Place your face approximately a foot away from the water and place the towel over your head. Stay here for about 10 minutes, but if it becomes too hot remove the towel and let some fresh air in again. For the best results, stay for at least 5 minutes.

As you are steaming allow the flowers to dance across your cheeks and kiss your nose. Allow their joyous offerings to bless and open each cell in you. Close your eyes and allow your mind to concentrate on how the steam feels. It can become a wonderful space for a little meditation. Once you are finished receiving all these healing energies, say a heartfelt thank you and rinse with cool water. Your pores will be cleansed and a little tighter, and your skin should be soft and smooth.

I am practicing to put this in my weekly routine. It is 15 minutes of heaven and it leaves my heart feeling calm, enriched and full of love. May it do the same for you!

I am an adventure seeker, nature lover, globe wanderer and unapologetically imperfect. My life has been full of marvelous mistakes, excellent experiments and more joy than I could have ever imagined possible. I am a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV), a Master of Public Health (MPH), Reiki Practitioner and am embarking on the exciting journey of starting my own business as a yoga instructor. I write to remind myself and others that abundant life is dancing on our doorsteps, we need only open the door and enjoy!
